Focus Is Your SuperPower

Do You Know Any Super-Humans?

It's not every day that you come across someone like my friend, Dave.

At just 26 years old, he's already accomplished more than most people dare to dream possible.

Here’s a short list of his accomplishments so far:

  • Founded a business as an electrician and is crushing it

  • A growing portfolio of homes he’s bought, fixed up, and is now cash-flowing on as rental properties

  • A licensed private pilot with the mission to serve Doctors Without Borders

  • Certified EMT

  • Semi-pro handball player who competes all over the nation

  • Unbelievably talented wood-worker who makes beautiful tables and other pieces of furniture for his friends

Dave's achievements are truly awe-inspiring, but what sets him apart, and perhaps other super-achievers you know, is his ability to focus.

Focus is a superpower—more now than ever before.

The Downside of Being a Dreamer

As an entrepreneur, you're likely a dreamer too. You have a unique perspective that allows you to see potential where others may not. However, being a dreamer can come with its challenges. Having numerous competing ideas and opportunities can be overwhelming. You might find yourself torn between starting a new company or acquiring an existing one, exploring short-term rentals versus multifamily opportunities, or building a podcast versus a newsletter.

I've experienced this firsthand in my own entrepreneurial journey. Trying to juggle multiple ventures and investment opportunities left me feeling like I was spinning my wheels. Constantly evaluating various business plans and real estate deals while trying to maintain a presence on multiple platforms was exhausting and counterproductive. The hard truth is that you can't do everything—at least not all at once.

To Do Everything, You Can't Do Everything

Dave's approach to success offers a valuable lesson for all entrepreneurs and dreamers. He excels at dedicating himself entirely to one dream, job, or task at a time. The key to his achievements lies in his ability to say 'no' to most of his dreams and ideas in the present to say 'yes' to the one thing he actively builds at that moment.

Now, you might be wondering if this means giving up on your other dreams forever. The answer is no. The ultimate goal is to say 'yes' to all those dreams and more, but the path to achieving them lies in starting with one.

Dave's Strategic Focus

Dave's success comes from thoughtful planning and strategic prioritization. For instance, he knew he wanted to start his own electrician business and invest in long-term single-family rentals. He decided to focus on his real estate goal first. Finding a house in need of renovation allowed him to purchase the property well below market rate. Dave then dedicated six months of his spare time to renovating the home and adding a basement suite for himself to live in.

Once the renovation was complete, he refinanced the property and recouped his investment. By renting out the remaining bedrooms, he covered his mortgage and generated significant additional monthly cash flow. This strategic approach provided him with the financial stability and time needed to take the risk of starting his electrician business, which now thrives alongside his successful rental properties.

Pick One

Emulating Dave's approach, you can start by asking yourself which one dream or idea you want to prioritize right now. Once you've chosen, commit yourself fully to it with unwavering focus and effort.

Remember, the journey to achieving your dreams might not be linear or immediate. It will require patience, determination, and resilience. However, by focusing singularly on your chosen path, you lay the foundation for future success.

Implementing Singular Focus

To make the most of singular focus, cut out distractions and noise that may lead you astray. Mute or limit accounts on social media that promote unrelated ideas or pursuits. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who are aligned with your vision and actively engaged in similar ventures.

Ignore the naysayers who project their fears and insecurities onto you. Instead, seek guidance and mentorship from those who have achieved what you aspire to accomplish. Be all-in on your "one thing" and stick with it until you succeed.

Hone Your Superpower

In a world filled with endless opportunities and possibilities, the ability to focus singularly on one dream or goal can be the key to unlocking extraordinary achievements. As entrepreneurs and dreamers, we may be blessed with numerous ideas, but attempting to pursue them all simultaneously can lead to scattered efforts and limited progress.

Look to super-achievers like Dave as inspiration. By prioritizing and dedicating yourself fully to one dream at a time, you'll create a solid foundation for achieving your dreams and ultimately turning them into reality. So, take a moment to identify your "one thing" and embark on the journey of unwavering focus—it's a superpower that consistently leads to abundance.
